Building Feeding Stations for Animal Colonies: A Guide
Drawing on my experience with establishing feeding stations for a colony of cats as a reference, this guide aims to provide insight into creating such shelters. Although my focus was on cats, the principles can be adapted to different types of animals.
Step 1: Site Selection
Identify a suitable location for the feeding station. For cats abandoned in the desert, we chose areas near bushes where they could seek refuge from dangers. A secluded location ensures a calm environment for the animals, acknowledging that not everyone is comfortable around them.
Step 2: Building the Station
You have the option to construct or purchase a feeding station. I opted to buy one made from plexiglass, known for its durability and resistance to various weather conditions. The station I selected features two compartments for food and water bowls, which are easily detachable for cleaning. My purchase supported a fellow animal helper, with proceeds going towards the medical treatment and sterilization of needy animals.
Step 3: Maintenance
Regularly replenish food and water to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the animals. For desert-dwelling cats, we collaborated with fellow rescuers to organize a schedule via a Facebook post, seeking volunteers for food and water replenishment. Volunteers signed up on a bi-weekly calendar, ensuring consistent care and fostering a sense of responsibility and commitment.
Step 4: Animal Sterilization
Sterilizing animals frequenting the station is crucial for responsible population management. Regular visits help build trust, making it easier to capture the animals for sterilization or spaying/neutering procedures, after which they are returned to their familiar environment. Within six months, we managed to sterilize 63 cats with the aid of specialized traps and carriers. Post-procedure, we treated any injuries and administered basic care, including flea removal. Each cat's details and medical history are meticulously recorded in an Excel file for easy reference.
Step 5: Additional Care
Every three months, I administer deworming tablets, hidden in wet food, to the animals. This practice significantly benefits their health and the well-being of the entire colony. Periodically, it's also advisable to clean the station's components to ensure hygiene and the health of the animals using it.
